What Is Street Medicine Outreach?

Street medicine outreach is a compassionate, community-centered approach to delivering basic medical care and essential resources directly to individuals experiencing homelessness or extreme hardship—wherever they are.

Rather than expecting people to come to a clinic, our outreach teams meet them in encampments, shelters, underpasses, and city streets throughout the Pittsburgh region. Services include:

  • Basic medical assessments and wound care

  • Medication education and referrals

  • Distribution of hygiene kits, clothing, socks, and blankets

  • Sharing of critical resources such as shelter options, transportation help, and behavioral health referrals

The Powell Foundation’s outreach team is made up of dedicated nurses, social workers, volunteers, and community members—often in plain clothes, meeting people with dignity, respect, and no judgment. We don’t just offer services; we build relationships, advocate for needs, and help people feel seen, safe, and supported.
